Choosing the Best Bike Rack

What to look for

  • Bicycle racks should attract cyclists and by design should encourage use.
  • Security - at least one wheel and the frame should lock securely.
  • All racks are misused to some degree. Look for racks which provide the same opportunity for security whether the bike is on the end or middle of the rack.
  • Supports the bicycle and does not pinch the wheel.
  • A frame design that does not trap debris.
  • Built from heavy materials.
  • Attractive.

A WORD ABOUT FINISHES AND MATERIALS

Most good bike racks today are available in a variety of finishes.

Paint - Racks that are painted chip and rust - stay clear.

Galvanized steel - the old stand-by. They never require maintenance when 'hot-dipped' in post fabrication.

Stainless steel - Attractive and expensive. Well suited for plazas and for buildings with stainless accessories.

Color coatings - High density plastics applied to heavy steel frames produce an attractive colorful product which will not chip. If you must have color ask for plastic finishes.

TODAY'S BICYCLES
Today's bicycles are made from lighter materials than a decade ago - lighter bikes, lighter wheels and lighter components.

Modern bicycle wheels are stronger vertically but are much weaker laterally.

Lighter components are more expensive and today's bicycles are more valuable.
